"Skin cancer is caused by a
malignant growth on the skin. There are three types of skin cancers called
basal cell cancer, squamous cell cancer and melanoma. Most skin cancers are
detectable because they form on the topmost layer of the skin known as the
epidermis. It is the most commonly diagnosed cancer. Apart from melanoma the
other two types are very common
BASAL CELL CANCER: Basal cell
cancer is the most common form of skin cancer. These cancers almost never
spread to other parts of the body. They can, however, cause damage by growing
and invading and surrounding tissue. Light-colored skin, sun exposure, and age
are important factors in the development of basal cell cancer. People who have
fair skin and are older have higher rates of basal cell carcinoma.
About 20% of these skin cancers,
occur in areas that are not sun-exposed, such as the chest, back, arms, legs
and scalp. The face is the most common location for basal cell cancer. Weakening
of the immune system, whether by disease or medication, can also promote the
risk of developing basal cell carcinoma.
SQUAMOUS CELL CANCER: Squamous
cells are found in the tissue that forms the surface of the skin, the lining of
the hollow organs of the body and the passages of the respiratory and digestive
tracts.
Unlike basal cell cancer,
squamous cell carcinoma can spread to other parts of the body. These tumors
usually begin as firm, skin-colored or red nodules. Squamous cell cancers that
start out on sun-damaged skin are easier to cure and spread less often than
those that develop in traumatic or radiation scars.
MELANOMA: is generally the most
serious form of skin cancer because it tends to spread through the body
quickly"
